The beach at Anjuna is rocky and not the highlight of this village. It is the community and the vibe that Anjuna, as the old hangout of the hippies in the sixties and seventies, retains. The best place to experience this is at the Wednesday flea market, or the hilltop market – yet another tradition stemming from its bohemian history. A wild range of great restaurants, and a trance music scene makes up for the lack of a generous stretch of sand on this beach. The sunsets though are just as spectacular as anywhere else on the coast.

Tucked in a quiet lane, Villa Dreamer is a four bedroom stylish home right next to some of Anjuna’s favourite restaurants. Tastefully done, the interiors exude luxe. The four bedroom villa,has its own private pool shaded by a mango tree that you will end up spending much of your time in, even though the beach is not far at all.e

Our villa Villa Mykonos will transport you to Santorini. The neat white bungalow, with its tiled roof and beach facing private pool, has a private and direct access to the Anjuna beach. Its interior of concrete and wood against the sparkling white walls could feature in any design magazine. The highlight is the pool, from where the sea, the horizon every sunset is an exclusive event  for the guest to enjoy. 

Vagator derives its name from the tiger that once freely roamed these wild parts. That was a long, long time ago. Now a hep beach destination, with many tourists, the Vagator is split into two by a rocky promontory.

The hilltop is also where you can find one of the most happening nightclubs of Goa. Its open air trance parties are to be experienced at least once during your stay in North Goa. 

Our spectacular 7 bedroom Villa Vagator near the beach could easily star in any Architecture and Design magazine. Its floor to wall marble bathrooms match the aesthetics of its wall to wall french windows across its three floors framing beautiful foliage of the trees outside. With decks overlooking the pool, and large sunken seating area in the tropical garden, this villa is for those who truly appreciate luxury. The roof with its view of the sea is an additional lounging area, with ample space for a large group to chill in.

Morjim saw its fortunes turn after the construction of the bridge between Siolim and Chopdem, connecting this fishing village with the rest of the tourist belt. Tranquil and laid back, the beach which extends right up to the Chapora river in the south is a favourite amongst foreign travellers. The southern tip facing off the Chapora fort on the other side of the river mouth is particularly spectacular. Morjim’s shallow waters make it a favourite for new surfers. A bunch of beachside shacks rim this beach in the north, but do not overwhelm the sense of peace here.

The beach of Mandrem lies between the twin beaches of Morjim and Arambol. Mandrem like Morjim is a nesting site for the endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles, and benefits from the turtle conservation efforts required.

This village, north of capital city Panjim offers a mature mix of historical monuments, beach sports, dining and shopping.  At one end stands the Aguada Fort, built in 1612 by the Portuguese to protect this colony that played a vital role in securing their global spice trade. Its ramparts wrap around the tip of the Bardez peninsula, encasing a wonderful old lighthouse and Goa’s first five-star hotel. A walking distance from the fort is the Aguada Central Jail which now houses an interactive museum of Goan history.

Popular and picturesque is the bastion of the fort jutting out into the sea at the near private Sinquerim beach. It is the perfect spot from where to admire the northward long stretch of the Candolim beach while waiting for the sun to set.

Nerul leads to Reis Magos, a quiet scenic village overlooked by an impressive fort atop a hill. The site overlooking the narrowest stretch of the Mandovi river was an outpost for the Bijapur Sultana before the Portuguese put it to strategic use, building a fort here. The recently restored fort, its ramparts and the church at the foot of it, face a surprisingly quiet beachfront. The beach itself is rocky, but invites a host of birds in the evening and offers a beautiful view of the Panjim riverfront across the Mandovi. The view from the top is even more impressive.

This fascinating collection of churches with gorgeous altars, and amazing Christian art includes the Basilica of Bom Jesus which houses the tomb and remains of St. Francis Xavier. Old Goa, rich as it is, doesn’t encompass everything the area around Panjim has to offer. With its colourful colonial era houses, Azulejo tile nameplates,  and balconies along the narrow streets, Fontainas is heaven for the young instagrammers.

One way to dodge the many street photoshoots is by climbing Panjim City’s many quaint steps that all lead up to Altinho. Here you will find a fine cafe and gallery or two, and get a great view of the city below. Descend again after sunset for a glass of urrak or feni at any of Fontainas’ popular little bars. The town at large has several must try bakeries, and fine dining places.

Busy as it can get, Panjim is still a great repository of grand Portuguese colonial architecture. Its waterfront also provides access to its popular Casinos, which light up as floating Christmas trees on the Mandovi river at night.  When you rent a villa in North Goa, the casinos are also accessible from the Mandovi’s northern bank.

Right across Old Goa, accessible only by ferry, is Divar island. The island’s protective inhabitants have ensured the footprints of tourism are faint, despite the fact that Divar holds more than one interesting attraction.
